Research Interest:The
Applied research is devoted to the study of nutrition and growth of aquatic
species of commercial interest (shrimp, sea urchin, fish) in confined
conditions, inland and off-shore. Connected to the research on the feeding of
species of commercial interest is the study of polymer matrices for the
manufacturing of functional pellets. Applied research covers activities
relating to:
• Formulation of biopolymer matrix based pellets for animal feeding.
Polysaccharides obtained from renewable sources are used as binders for the
manufacturing of pellets to be employed for feeding of aquatic species of
commercial interest.
• Use of biopolymer matrices added with bioactive molecules (edible coating)
for the preservation of animal products. Polysaccharides obtained from
renewable sources are used, also with the addition of functional biomolecules,
for the shelf-life extension of fillets of trout Oncorhynchus mykiss.
Another field of applied research based
on the results deriving from the study of
estradiol-receptor interaction in Octopus vulgaris gave rise to the
realization of an environmental
biosensor for pollutant
detection.
Research Interest:Primary

muscle, processing technology and food safety of sashimi (edible raw fish
meat), and consumerism.

Sitti
Raehanah Muhamad Shaleh, an esteemed researcher and lecturer, has left an
indelible mark on the field of aquaculture through her unwavering commitment to
advancing knowledge, teaching, and research. With a profound passion for
aquatic life and a thirst for exploration, she has tirelessly dedicated herself
to unravelling the mysteries of aquatic ecosystems and contributing
significantly to the growth of the aquaculture industry. Born with an innate
curiosity, her journey in academia began with her pursuit of a Bachelor's
degree in Fisheries Science, which she accomplished in 1994 from Universiti
Pertanian Malaysia (UPM). Recognizing her potential as a budding scientist, she
delved further into academia, embarking on a remarkable journey to attain a
Ph.D. in Aquatic Ecosystem Management in 2004 from the same university.
Sitti Raehanah's research journey took her across continents, as she ventured
to the United States to conduct groundbreaking research on microalgae and
seaweed culture at the prestigious Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La
Jolla, San Diego. Upon her return to Malaysia, Sitti Raehanah's
dedication and competence were recognized when she was appointed as the Dean of
the School of Sustainable Agriculture at UMS Sandakan. Her two-year tenure saw
her imparting her wisdom and fostering growth in both students and the
institution. Her leadership and passion further solidified her reputation as an
academic luminary. Sitti Raehanah's journey continued to flourish as she
assumed the role of Visiting Professor at Kindai University in Japan. Her
international collaborations enhanced her global perspective on aquaculture
research, enriching her knowledge and enabling her to contribute to the field
from multiple angles. In 2019, Sitti Raehanah reached another pinnacle in her
illustrious career when she was entrusted with the position of the fourth
director of the Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) at Universiti Malaysia
Sabah (UMS). Under her guidance, the institute has thrived as a hub of
innovation, research, and education in the realm of marine sciences, fisheries
and aquaculture. At the heart of Sitti Raehanah's journey lies her unyielding
commitment to research and education. Her in-depth exploration of microalgae
has paved the way for groundbreaking advancements in this crucial area of
aquaculture. Additionally, her investigations into Harmful Algal Blooms have
provided vital insights into their effects on the aquaculture industry,
contributing to its sustainable development. Beyond her research, Sitti
Raehanah's impact is felt in the lecture halls and classrooms. Her dedication to
teaching has led her to educate countless undergraduate students in subjects
like seaweed farming, fish processing and post-harvest handling, live feed
culture, and hatchery seed production. Her engaging and informative teaching
style has also inspired many to pursue careers in aquaculture. Sitti
Raehanah Muhamad Shaleh's journey is a testament to the power of passion,
perseverance, and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Her contributions to
aquaculture research, education, and leadership have left an indelible mark on
the field, and her legacy will continue to inspire generations of marine
scientists and enthusiasts to come.

feeding, reproductive, mating behavior of seahorses and pipefish are
particularly interesting in my team, Biodiversity of rare fishes: The resources of rare fishes have been changed
a lot along the China’s coast, our work aimed to set up effective bases and
strategy to conserve them, Aquaculture: Seahorse reproduction and juvenile seahorses survivorship are
the key study throughout the world,we focused on this field for many years.High
demand for them in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) makes us feel very
necessary to continue this work.
